Real-World Data Capture for Household Robotics Training

Real-World Data Capture for Household Robotics Training

Challenge

A Japan-based robotics company was building service robots for household chores. The tasks included floor cleaning, chopping of fruits and vegetables, washing clothes, and more. Homes are dynamic and not structured like industrial environments. Therefore, it was difficult for the client to capture high-quality, large-scale human data to train robots for real-world scenarios.

Solution

Cogito Tech offered a solution by executing a large-scale, real-world data-capture program across more than 250 household chores. We implemented a dual-shift operational model to capture data. Multimodal sensing (RGB, depth, and 3D LiDAR) and structured task sequencing yielded high-fidelity learning-by-demonstration datasets that captured long-horizon task flows, real-world variability, and natural human behavior.

Outcome

More than 1350+ hours of real-world data were captured within 40 days for 250+ household chores. The data capture achieved 99% accuracy across task annotations and perception. Our team enabled robust benchmarking and training of robotics navigation, perception, and task execution models within the stipulated timeline.

Real-World Data Capture for Household Robotics Training

Project Overview

The client was developing service robots for household settings. Home environments pose different challenges than industrial automation. Unlike factory floors, where layouts, objects, and workflows remain stable, homes are dynamic, disarranged, and unpredictable. Lighting conditions change throughout the day, object placement varies, and human behavior is subject to environmental uncertainty.

Robots need to learn precise manipulation & navigation along with adaptability, long-horizon task planning, and contextual awareness to operate effectively in such environments. This demands real-world, large-scale human demonstration data. It helps capture how people naturally perform daily household tasks.

The Cogito Tech team stepped in to support the client’s goal of generating high-fidelity datasets.
These datasets would help robots learn to reliably perceive, plan, and execute daily chores in dynamic home environments.

Challenges Faced

It is fundamentally harder to teach robots inside homes than in structured industrial settings. The challenges faced during this project included:-

Capturing Natural Human Actions
Household tasks majorly depend on implicit human knowledge. It is how people adapt their movements to obstacles, object placement, context, and task goals. These behaviors are hard to define via explicit programming rules and need observational learning from real human activity.

Environmental Variability
In home settings, there is variability of lighting, room layouts, object positioning, and furniture geometry. It is challenging to capture this unpredictability in data so the model can generalize beyond controlled laboratory settings.

Long-Horizon Task Planning & Execution
Household tasks are rarely single-step actions. These tasks include extended action sequences such as managing multiple objects, navigating through rooms, resuming tasks, and handling interruptions. Capturing long-horizon workflows needed contextual continuity and precise sequencing.

Scale Without Precision Compromise
The client needed data capture for more than 250 household chores while maintaining temporal alignment, high accuracy, and consistency across sensor modalities.

Solutions Offered

Cogito Tech planned a multimodal, structured data capture pipeline to address these challenges. The pipeline was optimized for robotics learning and embodied AI training.

Multimodal Data Capture
With synchronized RGB, depth, and 3D LiDAR streams, Cogito Tech experts enabled accurate modeling of motion trajectories, object geometry, spatial relationships, and environmental context, even in low-light or cluttered home settings.

Built for Real-World Variability
In the data capture process, we deliberately included different layouts, lighting, human motion interference, and object configurations to ensure generalization to real homes.

Structured Task Sequencing
Household chores were captured as structured sequences rather than isolated actions. Each task was fragmented into sub-actions (reach, grasp, manipulate, place, adjust), helping the client’s robotics team to train models capable of planning extended action chains and adapting to task variability across environments.

Scalable Execution Model
We ensured rapid scale by implementing an 18-hour dual-shift execution model. It helped us maintain precision, consistency, and operational reliability. The client not only acquired motion primitives but also contextual awareness, task sequencing, and recovery behaviors when chores deviated from predicted flows.

Results Delivered

Cogito Tech achieved 99% accuracy across perception and task-annotation workflows. We successfully delivered 1350+ hours of real-world human demonstration data across more than 250 distinct household chores, all completed within the 40-day timeframe.

This high-quality dataset enabled the client to train perception models capable of handling cluttered, dynamic environments, significantly improve long-horizon planning and navigation performance, benchmark robotics modules across perception, manipulation, and navigation, and accelerate the transition from early prototypes to fully deployable service robots.
